Fundraising for Assert

Many people have expressed an interest in raising money for Assert to help us in our work of supporting families and carers of those affected by Angelman Syndrome.

Fundraising can range from individual sponsored events and money making activities through to larger events such as marathon running or long distance cycling. All are equally valid, and welcome.

It might be possible for you to suggest Assert as the nominated charity of your school or workplace for an event. Maybe you could hold a coffee morning or if you like making things, perhaps make something to sell.

You could take part in a car boot or garage sale or even sell something on the internet and donate the proceeds to Assert. Is there a sporting event that you could take part in locally? Or can you think of something really unusual or daring for which people could sponsor you?

Any money raised by you will help us to continue providing the essential services offered to our families as well as helping us to raise awareness of Angelman Syndrome. We are a registered charity run by volunteers and rely solely on donations and sponsored fund raising.

We have put a guide together to help you in your fundraising efforts - to give you various suggestions and answer some of the more frequently asked questions. We hope that it will inspire you in your efforts and give you the resources that you need. If you’d like a copy please get in touch using via our usual contact details.

London Marathon

ASSERT is very grateful that for the past few years we have had a number of people who have voluteered to run in the London Marathon and in doing so have raised significant funds for the charity. Without their amazing efforts we would not be able to carry on the work we do.

This year the following people are running on behalf of ASSERT. Click on their links if you would like to support thair valliant efforts.

One-off Donations

The best way to make your make a one-off donation is via the JustGiving site, as the Government’s Gift Aid (for every pound donated, Assert receive an additional twenty eight pence from the tax man) is reclaimed automatically on these amounts, out of which the website takes a very small fee. Just go to the Just Giving page: http://www.justgiving.com/angelman/donate and click on the ‘Make a one-off donation’ tab. If you don’t want to donate on-line you can send a cheque, made payable to ‘ASSERT’ and post it to:

Gift Aid

logoGift Aid is a scheme operated by the UK Government which allows registered charities to reclaim the tax paid on any donation amount.

In other words, for every pound donated, Assert will receive an additional twenty eight pence from the tax man, at no additional cost to the donor/sponsor.

To qualify for this rebate, any sponsor or donor must be over 18, paying income tax and living in the UK. All of the details on the sponsorship form must be completed (and the gift aid box ticked). We will then send the completed forms to the Inland Revenue and receive the additional income. You need not do anything except explain about gift aid to those for whom it is relevant and encourage them to complete the form fully (but only if they are happy to do so).

Just Giving

logo

For those with internet access, we are also registered with the website www.justgiving.com which allows potential fundraisers to create a free internet page to publicize their event along with an online sponsor form.

Payments can then be made using a secure server for credit and debit cards, the money being automatically transferred to Assert. Donations can also be made by credit and debit card. The Government’s Gift Aid is reclaimed automatically on these amounts, out of which the website takes a very small fee. The instructions are very user friendly, and you’ll be up and running in just a few minutes.

For some people this is a very useful tool in their fundraising efforts, particularly if contemplating taking part in a large event such as the London Marathon. If you have any questions at all, please use our usual contact details.
